Department of Health, Exercise Science, and
Secondary Education Disciplines |
The secondary education faculty work
extensively with other departments on
campus and the state of Tennessee to
secure teacher licensure for students
admitted to the Teacher Education
Program. All students seeking licensure
in a secondary education area (Other
than physical education or health) will
declare their major in the College of
Arts and Science or the School of
Music. Licensure areas include biology,
business, business technology,
chemistry, English, French, government,
health, history, mathematics,
instrumental music, physical education,
psychology, Spanish, and vocal/general
music. Numerous add-on licenses are
available. For a complete list see the
add-on endorsement section at the end of
the introduction to the Helen DeVos
College of Education in this
catalog.
The Health Science major with an
emphasis in Fitness and Wellness
prepares students for careers in
corporate, commercial, community, and
hospital based settings. Knowledge of
the human body and the effects of
exercise and general self-care are
emphasized. Students are encouraged to
prepare for and take one of the American
College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
certification examinations immediately
after graduation.
The Physical Education and Health
Education majors prepare professionals
for successful and productive careers in
teaching grades K-12. The programs
emphasize knowledge of the human body,
self care, and methods and techniques to
motivate all students to lead healthy
and productive lives throughout their
lifespan.
An emphasis in Recreation is offered for
students wanting to work in various
recreation settings. A leadership track
prepares students for careers in city
and county agencies, YMCAs, or on
college campuses. A second track focuses
on outdoor recreational experiences and
emphasizes safety, skills, and teaching
styles in canoeing, backpacking and
several other outdoor venues.
The major in
Athletic Training prepares
students to be allied health
professionals educated and skilled in
meeting the health care needs of
athletes and those who participate in
physical activity. Prevention,
evaluation, management, and
rehabilitation of sports related
injuries are the diverse
responsibilities of an ATC (certified
athletic trainer). Students graduating
from this program must be prepared to
take the NATA certification exam. |
