APPLICATION
Student Teaching
Application Application
for the Student Teaching Program must be
filed by January 30 for fall semester
and by September 15 for spring semester.
Application forms may be obtained
on-line or in the DeVos College of
Education Building, Room 232.
THE STUDENT TEACHING EXPERIENCE
The enhanced student teaching must be
for 15 weeks. Each assignment is usually
about seven and one half weeks, however,
the assignments may be for 10 weeks and
five weeks.
The student teacher
moves steadily through the phases of
orientation, observation, and
participation, gradually assuming more
and more responsibility in planning and
directing learning activities. Each
individual student teacher should
advance as rapidly as his/her learning
permits and the situation dictates.
Eventually every student teacher will
assume full responsibility for planning,
organizing, directing , and evaluating
the teaching-learning environment. The
cooperating teacher guides, coordinates,
and stimulates the student teacher
through his/her teaching experiences. It
is recommended that the student teacher
teach a full load for two weeks and then
gradually give classes back to the
cooperating teacher.
STUDENT TEACHER SEMINAR
Group Seminars:
During each student
teaching semester, a series of seminars
relating to student teaching is
scheduled. In addition to these, there
is a workshop immediately preceding the
student teaching session. During the
workshop, each student will be given
information relative to his/her
assignment and responsibilities in
student teaching. Other conferences of a
shorter duration will be scheduled by
the Director of Educational Field
Experiences and the various supervising
teachers. Reports concerning his/her
work in student teaching will be turned
in at these meetings and problems
encountered in student teaching will be
discussed. Student teachers will be
given the dates of these meetings. It is
necessary that student teachers attend
these conferences. These constitute the
course, EDU 434, Student Teaching
Seminar. A separate grade is assigned
for this course. The class time is on
Thursdays at 4:30-5:30 P.M.
Small Group Seminars:
On alternate Thursdays,
student teachers meet with their
university supervisor to discuss more
specific issues related to individual
student teacher’s settings.
Individual Conferences:
These conferences may be
scheduled with the cooperating teacher
or the university supervisor. The time
and frequency of these conferences
should be worked out with the teachers.
It is suggested that a conference be
held each week.
